I’m on such a donut kick right now.
My donut pan is sure getting a lot of use.
I wanted to create something completely opposite than my last batch, so I went the chocolate route. When I think of chocolate, I immediately picture Nutella. I’m not a huge chocolate fan, but Nutella I could eat right out of the jar and paired with a donut, I figured it’s bound to be pretty tasty.
To really pack as much Nutella in there as possible, I created a Nutella frosting and added some to the donut mix as well. I played around with a few different toppings, both of which were perfect compliments to the rich flavor. To add some crunch, I sprinkled on toasted hazelnuts and for a more simple topping, I added a light layer of powdered sugar.
Now go get to baking!
- Donut Ingredients:
- 1 cup flour
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- ½ cup half and half
- ¼ cup Nutella
- ¾ teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Hazelnuts, toasted and crushed (optional)
- Frosting Ingredients:
- ¼ cup powdered sugar
- ½ cup Nutella
- ⅓ cup half and half
- Heat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a donut pan with non-stick cooking spray.
- In a medium bowl mix together the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder and salt. In a separate bowl whisk together the half and half, egg, vanilla, butter and Nutella. Pour the Nutella mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients and mix until the batter just comes together.
- Spread batter evenly with a spoon into the donut pan, only fill up each mold halfway. Bake for 10-12 minutes, don’t overcook. Place on a rack to cool before adding the frosting.
- While the donuts are cooling, whisk together the powdered sugar, Nutella and half and half until the frosting is creamy. Dip the tops of each donut into the frosting. Before the frosting hardens, add either the crushed hazelnuts or powdered sugar topping. Enjoy!
