Cheez-its, what can I say, they are pretty much the most delicious baked cracker of all time. Once you get past the bright orange color (it can’t be cheese right?) and the laundry list of unpronounceable ingredients, they are an incredibly tasty snack with the perfect amount of salt and crunch.
Since I no longer allow myself to buy a box (for obvious reasons), I instead feed my cheese cracker addiction with this homemade version. They taste exactly like the store bought stuff and only require 4 ingredients! Once you’ve made the dough, the trick is to roll it out as thin as possible to ensure they have a nice crunch after baking. But watch out, they are still every bit just as addicting!
- 6 oz. grated cheddar cheese
- ½ stick butter
- ¾ cup flour
- ¼ tsp salt
- sea salt, for sprinkling
- In a food processor, pulse all of the ingredients together until it forms a ball (about 2 minutes).
- Place the ball between two pieces of wax paper, and roll it out to about ⅛ inch thick.
- Using a knife, cut the dough into small squares. Feel free to use a pastry wheel or small cookie cutters instead, if you have them at your disposal. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet and poke each cracker with a fork or skewer so that they don’t puff too much. Sprinkle with extra sea salt.
- Bake at 350ºF for 10 minutes, until lightly browned on the edges. Cool on the baking sheet, and store in an airtight container.
