I spent my past Saturday morning baking donuts, and it was glorious. In my opinion, all weekends should involve baking and glazing.
Also, who knew it was so easy to bake donuts? I was very happy with the way these turned out, especially for it being my first try. For my boyfriend this was a game changer, since now he doesn’t have to go far for fresh baked (and free) donuts.
Baking is both an easier and healthier alternative to frying donuts. I’d say the most challenging part was finding the donut pan. If you are looking, Bed Bath and Beyond is your best bet.
My donut mix combines all the usual suspects along with browned butter, nutmeg and cinnamon to give a nutty and rich flavor. For the top, I made a simple brown butter glaze and sprinkled each with a touch of cinnamon.
If you find yourself with no plans one Saturday morning, you should pull out your donut pan and give this recipe a try!
- Ingredients for Donuts:
- 1 cup flour
- ¾ teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 egg
- ½ cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Ingredients for Brown Butter Glaze:
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons cream
- ½ teaspoon vanilla
- Heat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a donut pan with non stick cooking spray.
- In a medium bowl mix flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, nutmeg and cinnamon. In a small sauce pan over low heat, melt the butter until it is brown and smells nutty. Keep a close eye on the butter to make sure it does not burn. In a separate bowl whisk together egg, buttermilk and vanilla. Whisk the browned butter including the browned bits with the wet ingredients.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, until they are well combined. Make sure not to over mix the dough. Spoon batter evenly into the donut pan. Bake for 10-12 minutes, make sure not to over cook. Place on a rack to cool.
- While the donuts are cooling, melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat until it browned. Pour the butter into a small bowl and whisk in the powdered sugar, cream and vanilla until smooth. Dip the donut tops in the glaze and sprinkle with cinnamon. Enjoy!
